WORKSHOP: Fiction as the Art of Return with Madeleine Thien
Certain pieces of writing live with us for years, even decades, before they take shape as a story, an essay, a non-fiction work, a poem. How do we work on a piece of writing across time? How do we pick up where we left off, or find a new way of seeing, or alter something to find its essential qualities, or discover how a work might grow as we, too, are changed? In this workshop, we will think about the ideas, worlds, and characters recur in our individual work. think about the ways have we have tried to tell (or not tell) this story, and experiment with other avenues that might be possible. We will look at the processes of starting over, of revision and reimagining, as well as the revelations fine-tuning and rigorous editing can bring to light.
