Riddle Fence presents the second in our series of online workshops! Join from wherever you call home, and learn from some of the very best writers in Newfoundland and Labrador (and beyond!)

This workshop has been generously supported by CEDP funding from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and is offered at a pay-what-you-can rate. Workshop run time will be 2-3 hours.

Grappling with the Monster: A Personal Essay Workshop

with Sharon Bala

Author Sharon Bala is wearing a green sweater and smiling. In every writer’s basement lurks a monster. Maybe it’s professional jealousy. Maybe it’s the resentment you feel toward your children… or that time you made a fool of yourself in public, or were ghosted by a friend, or maybe it’s your secret shoplifting habit…

When a true story veers into this complicated, uncomfortable territory, readers lean in… and writers often shy away.

In this workshop, we will explore the elements of personal essay, including: narrative, momentum, perspective, and insight. And we will hone in on what makes an essay interesting. Together we will venture into the basement, face the monster down, and write with its help.

This workshop will include significant writing time. Feel free to bring an essay-in-progress or a blank page. Though not mandatory, participants will be encouraged to share their work aloud. This workshop will be especially useful for writers who wish to have their creative non-fiction published in Riddle Fence.

Workshops will be presented over Zoom, and will require a password.
